About

Sky Davies is a multi-award-winning cinematographer, bringing to life projects from such diverse arenas as feature film to video art. Most recently Sky has been in production on the television series MYSTERY ROAD taking the iconic series into the Old Growth forests of WA. This came off the back of FAKE, starring Asher Keddie and David Wenham, directed by Emma Freeman, Taylor Ferguson and Jennifer Lacey, for Kindling Pictures and Paramount+. Earlier in 2023 she shot HOUSE OF GODS, directed by Fadia Aboud for Matchbox Pictures. In 2022 Sky shot Season 2 of Tim Minchin’s popular television series UPRIGHT, directed by Mirrah Foulkes. In 2021 Sky shot the original dark comedy mini-series A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO GRIEF for Kojo and SBS, with the series winning in the Best Digital Series or Channel category in the 2022 AACTA Awards. In 2020 during Australia’s first COVID-19 lockdown, Sky shot RETROGRADE a six-part narrative comedy for ABC, directed by Natalie Bailey (UNUSUAL SUSPECTS, RUN).

Sky’s debut feature, the genre film BLOOD VESSEL (2018), has screened at numerous festivals including NYC Horror Fest (US), GrimmFest (UK), FilmQuest (UK) and MonsterFest (AU), drawing acclaim for her cinematography including winning her a Golden Tripod ACS Award in 2021. In 2020 Sky completed principle photography on her second feature film SHIT, a poetic adaptation of Patricia Cornelius’ award winning play by the same name.

Sky’s short film work has been screened at over 120 festivals (Berlinale, MIFF, Oberhausen, AACTA, Palm Springs) garnering her many festival awards as well as ACS Gold, ACS Silver, and the prestigious ACS Golden Tripod for GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART, directed by Bec Peniston Bird. Most recently TARNEIT, her second collaboration with director John Sheedy, was awarded the prestigious Iris Prize.  Their initial collaboration MRS MCCUTCHEON (2017) had its Australian premier at the Melbourne International Film Festival of the same year, winning Best Australian Short Film. MRS MCCUTCHEON was also nominated by AFI/AACTA and Screen Producers Australia for Best Short Film as well as over 10 festival wins worldwide. In 2013 Sky shot Neil Triffet’s EMO THE MUSICAL which garnered a Crystal Bear Special Mention at the Berlinale, along with winning Best Short Film at the SPA Awards and the St Kilda Film Festival.

Sky has shot 2nd Unit for both Film and TV, including: FIRES, released in 2021, a 6 part anthology series for Tony Ayres Production, NBCU and the ABC, directed by Anna Kokkinos, Kim Mordaunt and Michael Rymer; STATELESS, released in 2020, a six-part series for Matchbox and ABC, created by and starring Cate Blanchett, directed by Emma Freeman and Jocelyn Moorhouse; and UNDERTOW, Miranda Nation’s debut feature, which premiered at the 2018 Melbourne International Film Festival.

In addition to her narrative work, Sky has collaborated with esteemed video artists including Shaun Gladwell, Christian Thompson, Candy Bowers and Laresa Kosloff and regularly works within the documentary realm shooting such pieces as COMING BACK OUT BALL (Closing Night MIFF ‘18) and GRACEFUL GIRLS (Audience Award MIFF ’15).
